The Trustees of The Student View are seeking a new Chair with a strong sense of social, cultural awareness and a genuine passion for education and young people. This is an innovative role for a candidate with strong networking skills, to support the CEO in growing the Charity through its upcoming, exciting development stages.

We are sourcing a new exceptional Chair of Trustees who can demonstrate cultural awareness, commitment and understanding of this unique Charity’s social purpose, which is to educate and shape media literacy for young people.

The Student View actively hosts newsroom workshops in schools across the U.K.’s most underprivileged communities. Our pop-up newsrooms aim to increase media literacy amongst students, introduce them to journalistic skills and prevent societal harm from misinformation that can be often spread via social media.

Our ideal candidate will have an entrepreneurial mindset, have a talent for networking and cultivating professional relationships.

As the newly appointed Chair, you will lead the development of a new long-term plan for the charity, working with the CEO and the trustees, assessing ways to scale our impact. You will help in our strategic partnerships and key fundraising relationships and be well networked amongst the media, tech, education, policy world.

You will have experience of growing an organisation, be comfortable working in a small-sized charity, with big ambitions. The ideal candidate would be an essential asset in growing the charity’s impact at a larger scale.

A media or digital background is not essential however, a background in education or tech is useful. You may also have experience working closely with charities and or partaken in charity initiatives pertaining to young people or digital education.

This role is to lead the board of trustees. We currently have five trustees and have plans to grow that number. Experience of being a trustee is essential, and of being a chair of trustees is preferable. However, familiarity with the Charity Commission’s code for trustees is essential.

The Student View have built a great reputation already and have established strong likes with leading stakeholders such as the FT, Google, Belingcat and TikTok.

This is an exciting opportunity for the right candidate to immerse themselves in shaping media literacy for young people, to work with a range of stakeholders and shape policy.

This role requires a commitment of 5 hours a month to include ad hoc advice to the CEO. The Trustees meet quarterly for formal board meetings virtually and trustees reside in various parts of the U.K.

Welcome from the CEO and Chair of Trustees

Dear Candidate,

The Student View is the UK’s leading media literacy charity.

We run pop-up newsrooms where pupil journalists write local news stories, focused on the issues that our young people care about most. We use that model to help educate young people about the harms of misinformation. Funders of our work include the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, The Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport and News UK.

In addition, we are seeking to influence change in the educational curriculum about how media literacy is taught in schools and the appropriate industry wide response. We are the founding Secretariat of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Media Literacy. We recently completed a successful first year and are looking forward to playing a part in the policy debate.

We are looking for a Chair of Trustees who can succeed our current Chair when she comes to the end of her second term. We are looking for someone passionate about our purpose and about young people.

TSV has grown in scale and impact and our new Chair will join as we emerge from the challenges of the pandemic. During that time, we have diversified our work and made great progress on our fundraising strategy.  We have partnered with new organisations and extended our current agreements.

The new Chair will lead the trustees and a big task will be to work with the staff and the Trustees to develop a new 3–5-year strategy and plans. This will include key areas such as fundraising, impact measurement, as well as our relationships with schools and our curriculum and the work we have been doing in our All-Party Parliamentary Group on Media Literacy.

About The Student View

The Student View are an innovative, youth focused charity established in 2017.

We have been working to build a media literate Britain where young people can distinguish between fact and fiction, spot mis/disinformation and contribute to the public debate through becoming involved in news investigations in their local area as a mechanism to engaging more with journalism.

Our work won The News/Media Literacy Award category of the 2019 Global Youth & News Media Prize. We launched first in London and have completed work in several other towns across England, particularly those in social mobility ‘cold spots’. We would like to scale our work and are looking to digital tools to do this.

We believe that the national curriculum should be updated to reflect the latest misinformation challenges and equip young people to be smart and savvy online.
