At First Give, we inspire young people to create a world characterised by regular philanthropic activity. We exist to ignite a social conscience in young people we support. We now seek a new Chair of Trustees to inspire our rapid expansion as a charity and maximise our impact.

Who we are

First Give was formed in 2014 with the intention of igniting a spark of social conscience in young people and contributing to a world where everyone is encouraged to engage in regular philanthropic citizenship. It launched its core programme in a handful of secondary schools in London and since then has grown to 200 schools across England and Wales with ambitions to reach more in the coming years.

Designed to empower all classes in an entire school year group, the core First Give programme raises awareness and prompts a sense of personal responsibility. Fully resourced activities over eight lessons and facilitated workshops help build understanding, confidence and valuable life skills, and the students engage in social action in direct support of their chosen local charities.

About the role

We are looking for a new Chair of Trustees to join our high-performing board of trustees as we look to enter a period of step change and diversify our delivery model. This is an opportunity to build on the excellent foundations laid by our outgoing Chair of Trustees, Sinclair Beecham, who supported our early years and initial scaling-up activity.

As we approach our tenth birthday, we are proud to celebrate the impact that we have had. Currently, we work with over 200 schools, 35,000 young people, and have given over £1million to charity through our programmes. As we take stock of these achievements, we are looking forward to plans that will support the rapid spread of our impact even further.

The new Chair of Trustees will lead our board as we re-evaluate our strategy and plot our course for growth. The way we work with schools is effective and benefits thousands of young people each year. We feel that by diversifying the way that we work and the programmes that we deliver then we can increase our impact further. To do this, our new Chair of Trustees must galvanise and effectively lead our Trustees, creating an environment where we can all flourish.

It is also key for the Chair of Trustees to appraise the performance of our trustees and executive team. We foster a culture of collaboration, which encourages us to positively challenge, scrutinise and support the Director and her team. Our new Chair of Trustees must uphold and encourage this culture to ensure that we remain strategically effective and operationally robust.

Who we are looking for

We’re in search of a Chair who embodies a profound passion for youth education and charitable giving. You must believe in the potential for positive change that these young individuals hold. Our aim is to provide concrete learning outcomes for everyone engaged in our educational programs, ensuring that our efforts resonate deeply and leave a lasting impression.

At First Give, we value innovation and seizing opportunities to broaden our influence. Our Chair will inject an entrepreneurial spirit into our organisation, building a culture of seizing opportunities to magnify our impact. We expect our ideal candidate to come equipped with a track record of leading organisations to identify, implement, and scale up significant new initiatives, either in their professional career or through pro bono work.

Leadership is a core pillar of our next Chair’s role. As First Give prepares for a transformative period of growth, we need a Chair who possesses strong leadership skills. This individual should excel at steering, mentoring, and ensuring accountability within the Board and Executive team. Their guidance will be instrumental in propelling First Give toward the realisation of its ambitious goals.

Strategic vision is pivotal in the evolving landscape of charitable organisations. Our Board of Trustees and the First Give leadership team are united in their belief in our organisation’s potential. The Chair we seek will exhibit the capability to make strategic decisions that are visionary and practical, ensuring that First Give continues to make a significant impact.

Our Chair should also be an outward-looking and ambassadorial figure who can create and nurture strong networks to propel the First Give mission forward. Despite our successes, we remain a relatively small charity. This leader may bring their extensive network, but even if they don’t, they should excel at building new connections that will increase our impact and fundraising efforts.

First Give is on the precipice of substantial change and growth, and our new Chair will be the guiding hand in our transformative journey. Welcome from the Selection Committee Chair

Thank you for your interest in becoming the next Chair of Trustees at First Give.

After ten years of leadership, our founding Chair, Sinclair Beecham, is stepping down. We are seeking a brave, visionary and strategic leader to replace him and support First Give as it enters its second decade and looks to achieve even more than it already has.

We know that 82% of 10-20 year-olds care about making the world a better place, according to the National Youth Social Action Survey (2019). Yet the number of young people participating in social action has fallen year-on-year, with many in the survey saying that it was due to a lack of access and opportunity. Our model that works with secondary schools to deliver our core programme, seeks to provide just that access and opportunity.

Over the last ten years, First Give has built a strong delivery model that delivers compelling outcomes for over 35,000 young people a year and is loved by hundreds of teachers in schools across England and Wales. Over the rest of 2023, as it looks to celebrate its first decade, the organisation will be reflecting on these successes – as well as challenges – and further developing its strategy in a way that will support the organisation to achieve its mission and vision over the next ten years. This is where you come in. We hope that our new Chair will be able to join the organisation as we undertake this process and begin to implement this strategy in late 2023 and beyond.

As the successful candidate, you will lead the Board of Trustees and support the Director and our talented staff team to execute our strategy. Along with the Director, you will also be the public-facing champion of First Give, helping build our relationships, with funders, leaders in education and beyond.

You will be a dynamic leader and teambuilder who will be comfortable using your skills, networks and expertise to drive First Give to achieve its full potential.
