Established in 2020, SMB College Group is formed of two merged colleges – Stephenson College and Brooksby Melton College – and their commercial entities.

Role Description

The Chair of Governors is responsible for the leading a dedicated group of board members who are passionate about the future success of the organisation whilst ensuring that the governance of the College remains effective and of the highest standard.

As Chair you will hold responsibility for ensuring that accountability is maintained in relation to the effective use of resources, with consideration for the welfare and wellbeing of both students and staff and that all safeguarding policies and procedures are followed.  You will offer support to the executive management team as they work to deliver on the College Group’s strategic priorities, playing not only the role of a critical friend, but also being accessible and mindful of the time commitment associated with holding such an important post.

You will be expected to support the development and influence the direction of SMB College Group as we seek to secure the finances, develop the curriculum offering and aspire to provide high-quality, meaningful education opportunities for learners.

Most importantly, you will be a vital ambassador, helping to build the College Group’s reputation across the local region and nationally.

The SMB College Group’s Governing Body members consist of volunteers from the community, staff members and students. Our Governors bring experience from a wide range of sectors and industries including business, education, and the public service sector.

Independent members are appointed by the Governing Body, Staff Governors are elected by the staff, and Student Governors are elected by our students.

The Governing Body meets at least once a term with the minutes being published after they have undergone an approval process.

The Corporation Board meets 4 times over the academic year with a strategic away day once per year – these meetings are held face to face and are rotated between Brooksby & Stephenson Campuses.

Committees meet 3 to 4 times over the academic year and meetings are held virtually to encourage participation and attendance.

A full and comprehensive induction programme is provided to all new governors and continued professional development in the role is encouraged, especially for those looking to progress within the Board. Successful appointment to the Board as a Governor is initially for one year with a further three years for a full term.

Who we are looking for

We are looking to engage a strategic leader from the local East Midlands’ area with a commercial background to lead the Corporation Board forward, bringing a passion for success along with a recognition of the value and importance of post-16 education.

It will be important that you hold an interest and passion for education and can demonstrate an active interest in young people and a drive to deliver excellence for the benefit of learners, employers, the local community and society in general.

Ideally, you will have previous experience as either a Chair, Governor and/or Trustee to ensure that you fully understand the importance of good governance and the impact this has on the overall performance of an organisation.  With this you will bring the necessary skills and expertise in order to lead the Corporation in a direction of travel that will result in: financial stability; student success; and, a culture of inclusivity.

Key competencies should include:

  • Strategic agility
  • Financial acumen
  • Organisational agility
  • Interpersonal savvy and composure
  • Experience of organisational transformation ideally in an education environment
  • A track record of bringing a fresh, independent perspective and approach to taking organisations forward
  • Board level experience (any sector) with experience of chairing
  • Understanding of the Nolan principles with regard to behaviour and style
