Chair Designate (Clinical Non-Executive Director) Pharm@Sea

Pharm@Sea provides exceptional, accessible, and innovative pharmacy services to outpatients, visitors, staff of University Hospitals Sussex Trust, and to the community in and around Sussex. Established and commercially successful, we now seek a clinical leader who will guide future enhancements to technological, operational, patient service and safety innovations.

  • Location: Hybrid / Brighton
  • Salary: Negotiable

Who we are

Established in 2014, Pharm@Sea is a wholly owned subsidiary of University Hospitals Sussex NHS Trust and is located in a purpose-designed pharmacy based in the Outpatients Department of the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton.

We are an innovative and forward-thinking company that aims to deliver the best quality of care to our patients. We utilise the latest technology, including a dispensing robot and prescription tracking software, to ensure that patients benefit from a safe, efficient and high-quality service.

The positive impact we already have on patients is remarkable. Our delivery service goes from strength the strength and we are in a great position to make more efficiencies from financial, clinical, and operational perspectives. We have not yet exploited all the opportunities available and now, we are ready to move into the next phase of development and expansion.

With 25 FTE, we have a well-established operation delivering over 70,000 prescriptions and 110,000 items to customers per year. Our turnover of £24m enables us to return a multi-million-pound contribution to the NHS Trust, and this commercial success allows us now to focus even more strongly on innovation and patient experience, even though they have always been at the heart of our approach.

We aspire to deliver a 9-minute turnaround time for prescriptions and are proud that 90% of all outpatient prescriptions are dispensed and returned to the patient within 15 minutes. However, demands on the NHS currently are such that these targets are increasingly difficult to meet.

The challenges of increasingly high demand means that our focus more than ever before is on patient safety. As we dispense increasingly complex high-value prescriptions, we have recognised that the constitution of our Board also needs to shift slightly from its strong commercial bias, despite its success in the past and the opportunities yet to take, to recruit more clinical expertise to help mitigate future risks.

About the role

As we plan the succession for a new Chair in November 2024, our Chair Designate will require a clinical background to deal with the increasingly challenging clinical demands. Particularly, clinical governance relating to technology, process innovation and electronic prescribing systems that are needed to help us meet the increasing demand and to uphold service levels.

The Chair role is complex. The Chair is required to engage with key people in the Trust as a shareholder and as a customer — Pharm@Sea operates through a formal contract with the Trust and maintains productive working relationships with board members and the executive.

You will need to be a confident figurehead for Pharm@Sea, ensuring the stakeholders are aligned to support expansion across the Trust’s sites. Facilitating the development of the Board is also a key element of the role.

The Chair manages the Operations Director and along with board members will need to maintain regular communications and ensure their ongoing engagement, performance and of course, support and guidance.

Who we are looking for

We are looking for a strategic leader with a high-level of clinical experience and the gravitas to engage with all key stakeholders both in the NHS Trust and with local communities. This NHS experience is essential to ensure that you can navigate the inefficiencies and barriers to decision-making, inherent in the NHS, and enable Pharm@Sea to continue to expand. An understanding of pharmacy is essential in respect of regulatory framework, pricing and supply considerations.

You will have non-executive experience and be able to demonstrate that you know what’s required to build and chair a high-performing business and Board.

Knowledge from a senior clinical role focused on patient safety and experience will enable you to understand how patient needs translate into both strategic development and operational action.

The new Chair also needs to bring a level of commercial acumen to ensure continued success in our financial performance.

It’s essential that you are aligned to our commitment to innovate and constantly improve the patient experience.

You must be collaborative and self-assured, able to work effectively with a board comprised of clinicians and businesspeople, as well as NHS stakeholders.

Whilst the operating environment, due to high demand, is currently challenging, we have a licence for expansion and our future growth potential into new sites is exciting work for the board to progress.
