Brockenhurst College is an Ofsted rated ‘Good’ college — a welcoming, inclusive and an inspiring place of learning. All students are supported in strengthening and developing both their academic and personal skills, learning to take responsibility for their own development, to support their positive onward progression from the college.

The college is seeking to appoint a new Chair of the Governing Body, with an inclusive approach to leadership, to ensure the progression of the college and quality of the learner experience is always developing and improving.

 

Who we are.

Brockenhurst College, known locally as Brock, is a further education (FE) college based in the heart of the New Forest.

The main college campus is situated within the village of Brockenhurst with a further four satellite sites in New Milton, Marchwood, Lymington, and Southampton, where more specialist aspects of provision are delivered.

At Brock, we place learners at the heart of everything we do and have a strong reputation for delivering excellent and inclusive teaching and learning, as well as effective all-round student support.

The college has tertiary college status and as such, it provides a broad range of qualifications for learners including programmes for 16-19 learners, apprentices, adults, higher education students and programmes for international students who come from over 20 different countries globally to study with us.

This diverse provision reflects the long-standing inclusive nature of the college, offering qualifications that meet the needs, interests and ambitions of our student community, as well as those of local, regional and national employers.

As a college, we have a significant responsibility to deliver the skills required to support the local and regional economy and as such, are involved as delivery partners, alongside other colleges, in the Institute of Technology agenda as well as the delivery of the Local Skills Improvement Plan through the Local Skills Improvement Fund. These agendas continue to be strategic drivers in the development of the college curriculum.

About the role.

The Governing Body of Brockenhurst College is made up of a strong group of ambitious individuals, committed to the continual improvement and progression of the college and student outcomes.

You will understand the importance of education and the impact this has on the students of Brockenhurst College, in addition to the positive impact the college has on local businesses and the local community.

You will draw on your expertise to offer appropriate levels of support and scrutiny to the board and senior leadership team, and you will play the role of a critical friend to ensure the college continues to achieve its objectives set out in the strategic plan.

As the new Chair of our college, you will have the ability to form a key relationship with the CEO and Principal, as well as the wider SLT — one of mutual respect and trust, with clear communication, sharing ideas and concerns.

The Chair will also lead an engaged and committed board of governors, ensuring a collaborative, inclusive, and respected environment is created to allow appropriate levels of support, scrutiny, and challenge, for the college to reach its goals, objectives, and ambitions.

Who we are looking for.

As the new Chair of Brockenhurst College, you will bring experience as a successful, senior strategic leader within your chosen professional field and carry an appreciation for values-led leadership.

We are looking for someone who shares our values of inclusivity and people focus and has a passion for education.

Additionally, this individual will have a strong drive to move the college forward and positively influence Brockenhurst College’s success.

The time commitment for this role will be 3 – 5 days per month.

Dear candidate,

We are delighted that you are considering the role of Chair of Governors at Brockenhurst College.

The college has been part of the local community as a post-16 provider for over 50 years, and has been a place of education for students more broadly for over 100 years.

It has a long-standing and excellent reputation for delivering education to a wide range of students within the community in areas of 16-19 education, apprenticeships, higher education (HE) and adult learning programmes.

The college is based in a unique location in the heart of the New Forest National Park. The main site is in Brockenhurst village, with four further satellite sites delivering specialist aspects of provision in New Milton, Lymington, Marchwood and Southampton. We have a wide catchment area for student recruitment, including international recruitment, and as such, we work with schools and employers across Hampshire, Dorset, Wilshire and the Isle of Wight as well as overseas.

As you would expect, the defining culture of the college is one of academic excellence and quality, alongside a strong culture of inclusion, respect and personal responsibility.

Our values are entrenched in those associated with further education, teaching and learning, alongside the broader experience of our students at all levels of study, being our highest priority.

We have a committed and highly capable staff body and governing board who are deeply invested in ensuring the success, all-round development and progression of our students. Brockenhurst College is quite simply a great place to study and to work.

The college is currently at a pivotal point in its development. Helen Odhams was appointed as Principal and CEO of the college in June 2023, and has been working closely with the board of governors as well as the college’s senior leadership team, staff, students and employers to shape the broader future strategic direction of the college. A new strategic plan will be place for September 2024 which will reflect the changing further education landscape, alongside the contribution the college will continue to make in meeting in local, regional and national skills needs.

We are now seeking a new Chair who shares the values of the college, who understands and is inspired by the opportunities open to, and challenges faced by, a further education college — and who is enthused by the prospect of leading the board and working with the Principal and CEO to shape, influence and deliver the vision, ethos and strategic direction of the college.

About us

Here at Brockenhurst College we support around 3,000 16-19 years old learners and 5,000 adult learners to achieve success on a wide range of A Level, vocational, adult learning, higher education and apprenticeship programmes.

We also attract a large number of international students who come to study at the college each year.
