About the roles

Faversham Counselling Service (FCS) is an established Kent based mental health charitable company providing a valued service both within the local community and beyond. We are a professional and confidential counselling service for young people and adults from all walks of life seeking help and support with personal, emotional or relationship problems. We offer free NHS IAPT (talking) therapies, as well as private and low-cost private therapy.

Our Managing Director has overseen a doubling in income, considerable growth in staff numbers, and a growth in our NHS contracts. We have excellent counsellors and deliver an effective service. We also provide training to final year counselling students, providing placements, mentoring and supervision. Next year we will be re-tendering for our IAPT contract which constitutes the majority of our work.

Who we are looking for

As we look to our future strategy, including expanding our low-cost counselling, increasing the amount of training we provide, growing our work with young people, increasing the amount of high intensity therapy we undertake, and continuing to develop our work with the NHS we are looking for a new Chair and a Trustee with HR expertise to work alongside us to help us continue to grow and develop.

As our next Chair you will work with our Managing Director and the Board of Trustees to develop our next strategy which will focus on growing and developing our service, ensuring financial sustainability and developing a more diversified income model. We are looking for someone who has the vision and ambition to match our own, has strategic experience of leading growth in a small or medium sized organisation and has some understanding of contracting, preferably within a health and/or social care setting. We are open to candidates who may be a first-time Chair of a board, with some experience of chairing committees in a NED or Executive capacity.

As our HR Trustee you will be an experienced strategic HR professional, preferably bringing some experience from within the charity or health sectors. As we continue to evolve and grow we would like to draw on your experience and insight to ensure we have robust HR systems and processes and continue to cultivate a culture where people are happy and are enabled to fulfil their potential.

The time commitment required to be a Trustee will be around one day a month.

The time commitment required to be our Chair will be around two/three days a month.

Dear Candidate,

Thank you for your interest in joining the board as our next Chair or as a Trustee of Faversham Counselling Service (FCS).

FCS has been providing a professional counselling service in the Faversham and Swale area since 1993 and, over the past few years in collaboration with UMC (University Medical Centre), we can provide services in other areas of East Kent.

We are proud of the reputation that FCS has gained with the NHS, in the local community, with local doctors’ surgeries and most especially with our clients.

I have been a Board member of FCS since 2012 and the Chair since 2014. I feel it is now time for me to move on and hand over to a new Chair who can take FCS on the next exciting stage of its journey. We are also looking for a new Trustee to join our Board who can bring strategic HR experience.

The counselling service has seen a significant growth over the past three years and has many ambitions for the future. We have a small, but very effective, Board and in our Chair we are looking for someone who can lead them as well as support our Managing Director and her team. As our new Trustee we would like to draw on someone with HR experience who can contribute at a strategic level to help continue to develop our staff, culture and performance.

The time commitment for both roles is not arduous, and I can guarantee you will find it very rewarding. It is important, however, that you as the Chair, and indeed all Board members, feel that they can make a difference to the aims and objectives of this excellent organisation which plays an important role in the community.

I would envisage a short handover period depending on the start date of my successor, with an opportunity to get to know FCS before taking over the role.

Our history and current work

FCS has been providing professional counselling for individuals and couples since 1993. We offer a BACP Accredited Service (The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy), considered a benchmark for professional and ethical standards in the UK. Since 2012 we have been working in the Faversham and the surrounding area for the local NHS CCG holding a contract to provide IAPT (Improving Access to Psychological Therapies). From 2015 we have been providing these services to Faversham under the auspices of UMC (University Medical Centre) as well as continuing to work directly with the local CCG in other areas of Kent including Sittingbourne and East Kent.

IAPT (Improved Access to Psychological Therapies) is a free and confidential talking therapies service for people aged 17 and over who have common and distressing conditions, such as anxiety, depression and stress). This is part of a national initiative to involve local qualified mental health providers in the treatment of these common psychological disorders that affect most of us at some point in our lives.

As well as taking referrals from GPs and other health practitioners we offer private self-funded counselling, a professional and confidential service for individuals and couples with personal, emotional and relationship problems. We also now provide low cost counselling for those who may wish for longer term therapy but may not be able to afford private therapy. For this service we use student counsellors who are supported and encouraged to grow as therapists. We also have services available to counselling practitioners.

Vision: FCS vision is to ensure that those requiring talking therapies can access them at the time of need in Faversham and the surrounding areas

Mission: Our mission is to enable ease of access in the provision of cutting-edge, NICE (The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence)-approved, talking therapies in Faversham and the surrounding areas.
