Chair Age UK Kensington & Chelsea

This is an opportunity to lead the board of a growing and innovative organisation striving to support more older people across the borough of Kensington & Chelsea in different and new ways.

  • Location: London
  • Salary: Unremunerated with reasonable travel expenses

Age UK Kensington & Chelsea (£2.9 million) an independent community-based charity working in the heart of Kensington & Chelsea to ensure that older people’s voices are heard, their needs are met, and their independence is supported. We are a team of 95 staff who provide a wide range of services including advice & information, and a variety of activities which improves wellbeing and address the issues of loneliness and isolation among older people. Our services range from informal social and leisure activities through to more practical assistance, social prescribing and in light of the pandemic delivering large scale humanitarian response from the first day of lockdown. We are part of the fabric of Kensington & Chelsea – a diverse and vibrant borough with need and demand for more services and innovation for older people.

As the UK was affected by the global pandemic, we were extremely concerned about the impact on older people and so we were ready to deliver our response from the first day of lockdown and it meant we were able to support over 1000 isolated older people across Kensington and Chelsea every week for over four months. We supported people with weekly care packages, fresh meals, basic supplies, keeping in touch calls, remote information and advice and bespoke activity packs for older people living with dementia. Alongside transport to and from vaccination sites, it was a concerning time but one which we look back on with great respect and admiration for our community, our volunteers, our service users, staff, board and partners

Prior to the pandemic we introduced in partnership with the NHS, My Care, My Way which has continued to grow from strength to strength with over 40 Health and Social Care Assistants working with over 7,000 patients with support to reduce hospital admissions and promote independence. Every NHS registered GP practice in Kensington & Chelsea is now signed up to My Care, My Way.

We also established our own trading arm “Age United” which works with Social Prescribing Link Workers across Kensington and Chelsea who support those aged 18-65 which enables us to support more people and we work closely with the council, CCG and Primary Care Network to deliver this project and grow our reach and impact.

More people are living longer lives and as an organisation we need to be fit for the years to come and ready to deliver the services our older people tell us they need.

We are developing innovative new offers such as our upcoming pilot to deliver an evidence-based long-term supportive intervention for people living with Dementia and exploring how exciting developments in technology can best support people as they age.

It is an exciting time to join and lead our board as next year we will begin to create a new three-year strategy.

We appointed a number of new trustees to the board during the pandemic with skills in fundraising, communications, marketing and leadership and as our Chair Martin Pendry reaches the end of his term in the new year, we are looking to appoint a new Chair.

We are looking for a person who can champion our organisation, be our ambassador and who is strategic, innovative, and can support our board and team through our next strategic phase.

We are a values driven charity and older people are at the heart of everything we do in our community, we are looking for someone who is committed and dedicated to supporting older people.

We are looking for a Chair who is a leader and passionate about our borough and the impact our charity achieves every day.

The board meets four times a year in the evening for 2 hours and we have 2 main sub committees, Finance and Risk committee and our Quality, Performance & Development and Human Resources committee which meet quarterly. We also meet once a year for a strategy away day and other ad hoc events throughout the year. We expect the time commitment for Chair to be about 2-3 days per month.

Closing date: Monday 24th January 2022

Thank you so much for your interest in our Charity and joining our board as our new Chair.

This is an exciting time for Age UK in Kensington and Chelsea (AUKC). For over 40 years we have worked at the heart of the community to ensure that older people are really listened to and supported to stay independent for as long as possible.

We couldn’t do any of this without our brilliant and dedicated volunteers who we are indebted to during the pandemic who supported us to ensure our older people in our Borough were cared for and supported during this time.

We are looking to create a new strategy which will involve our community and will shape our organisation to better support our key priorities.

We need to increase our sustainability and innovation, so we have a new focus on fundraising and income diversification. Part of this commitment is the development of our new trading arm, Age United, which you’ll also be a director of.

We’re in a strong financial position, but we are also operating in a wider context of uncertain financing and a rapidly changing healthcare environment. If you’re our new Chair, you’ll support us to through the next stage of development, partnership working and growth to support and work closely with other partner organisations in our borough and beyond.

We’re committed to partnership working and proud to work collaboratively in our community and with statutory organisations. But most of all, older people are at the heart of everything we do, and everything we want to do.

We’re really grateful to our current Chair, Martin Pendry who is remaining with us while we recruit our new Chair and will hand-over to the successful candidate.

If you want to discuss the Chair role, or have any questions, we encourage you to contact our consultants at Peridot Partners.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Jess Millwood, CEO
