Trustee – Hospitality | Carefree

Are you looking to join an innovative and award-winning ‘tech for good’ charity which is delivering transformational social impact? We now seek an experienced leader who will provide strategic guidance on scaling up operations and deepening engagement within the hospitality sector.

  • Location: London
  • Salary: Voluntary

About the role

Carefree transforms vacant accommodation into vital short breaks for unpaid carers, who often sacrifice their own health and wellbeing to care for the most vulnerable members of our society.

Our intervention is rooted in the belief that supporting carers to thrive requires systemic change, not sticking plasters. Marrying technology with community spirit, we are bringing the Caring Economy to life by enabling hospitality businesses to easily share their vacant rooms with carers referred by community partners via our digital platform to open up widespread access to breaks at no additional cost to the public purse.

In time, we hope our model also shifts our collective understanding of what’s possible when shareable resources are better aligned to society’s needs. We’re embedding resilience in a system that is overstretched and under-resourced, creating a more sustainable economy and social care system for us all.

Winning Breakthrough Charity of the Year and the hospitality industry’s SKIFT Innovation Award for best smart sustainability solution, Carefree has already enabled hundreds of carers to enjoy breaks across the UK and is poised to enable thousands more to do the same.

Our Board supports and enables Carefree’s continued growth by providing a suitable blend of high-quality charity governance with a responsive approach that recognises the often rapidly changing nature of a social tech start-up. Carefree now has all the ingredients of a charity that can, and will be, transformative in its impact.

Who we are looking for

We have recently grown the Carefree board selectively, adding members with expertise, experience and networks in: digital technology, social investment and impact. We now seek an experienced leader who can help provide strategic guidance on scaling up our operations and deepening our engagement within the hospitality sector.

Specifically, we are looking for someone who really understands the larger accommodation groups and the holiday accommodation agencies. We need someone who can provide insight into what makes them tick and what elements of Carefree’s proposition and business model will truly engage them. You will provide guidance on how we can build partnerships that secure a growing and sustainable supply of room inventory. Equally, you will provide strategic input to support our continuing evolution and growth.

The standard role of a Trustee will require a time commitment of approximately four quarterly board meetings & related preparation. Beyond this there are opportunities, and an expectation, to facilitate introductions within your networks and support the executive team with advice on request.

We welcome both experienced board leaders and those looking to take on their first Trusteeship. Ultimately you will be dynamic in your thinking and approach, with a real drive and passion to make a substantial social impact!

Welcome from Sarah Philbrick, Chair

Dear Applicant,

Thank you for your interest in joining the Carefree board. Carefree is a young, innovative and digital charity with huge ambition and strong progress to date.

Appreciating our nation’s carers has never been more vital or timely. There are millions of unpaid carers across the UK, mostly unrecognised, often unidentified, always dedicated and generally exhausted. Giving them a break – at no additional cost to the public purse – can be ‘priceless’. Our evidence from sourcing breaks for hundreds of carers confirms, unequivocally, that by enabling the business and social sectors to share their resources, we can help this drastically underserviced community address their mental health and wellbeing at scale. Moreover, we’ll better protect the future sustainability of our healthcare system.

As a board, our aim is to support and enable Carefree’s continuing growth by providing a suitable blend of high-quality charity governance with a responsive approach that recognises the often rapidly changing nature of a social tech start-up. Carefree now has all the ingredients of a charity that can, and will be, transformative in its impact. As a board, we need to ensure that growth is both sustainable & scalable, always keeping our charitable purpose front of mind. Only then can we make the biggest impact – valuing and supporting thousands of carers every year and through such intervention, increase the collective wellbeing of our society.

Over the last 18 months we’ve grown the Carefree board selectively, adding members with expertise, experience and networks in: digital technology, social investment and impact.

Now we’re ready to scale our operations. To do this we need expert guidance and pro-active engagement to initiate and develop deep and lasting relationships with the hospitality sector. Specifically, we’re looking to recruit an exceptional individual as a trustee, someone who really understands the larger accommodation groups and holiday accommodation agencies… What makes them tick? What elements of Carefree’s proposition and business model will truly engage them? How can we build partnerships that secure a growing and sustainable supply of room inventory? What further tech development will be needed to achieve a seamless, automated supply of rooms that carers can book directly? And so on.

I’m keen that as a board, we act in a way that’s greater than the sum of our parts and truly oversee and support the small but incredible staff team. We’re all learning together and that is part of the stimulus, the enjoyment and the challenge of being a Carefree Trustee.

It’s hard not to be moved by our carers’ stories. It’s exciting to anticipate what Carefree can achieve with the support of all its stakeholders. I do so hope you’ll consider bringing your energy, experience and hospitality expertise to our board.

I thank you for your interest and look forward to receiving your application.

Kind regards,

Sarah Philbrick
Chair

About Carefree

Carefree transforms vacant accommodation into vital breaks for unpaid carers.

Carefree harnesses the power of technology and the spirit of the shared society to support and sustain unpaid carers, the invisible workforce without which our social care system couldn’t survive.

We believe that caring for those who care is essential for the collective wellbeing of society and provide an easy means for the hospitality industry to gift its vacant capacity to full-time unpaid carers in need of a break. In doing so, we’re able to ensure that the carers who provide billions of pounds worth of public sector savings each year are able to receive some vital time off.

Carefree was started in the summer of 2016 by two brothers, Charlie and James Ricketts, whose own experiences motivated them to launch an initiative in support of unpaid carers. Both continue to be highly committed to Carefree’s success. Having tested the concept in Cornwall and witnessed the extraordinary impact on carers’ wellbeing, they moved the operation to London in early 2017 and began looking for seed funds. In July 2017 they were awarded a place on an accelerator for charitable ventures with outstanding potential and, not long afterwards, the first round of funding was secured.

In October 2017, Charlotte Newman (now CEO) joined the team and the charity was officially incorporated a month later, just as work on the first version of the booking platform began. The initial automated pilots in 2018 and 2019 enabled hundreds of carers to enjoy breaks in accommodation throughout the UK and further revealed the transformative potential of Carefree’s pioneering sharing economy model.

In 2020, Carefree won Breakthrough Charity of the Year at the Third Sector Awards and was awarded multi-year funding by the National Lottery Community Fund, the Postcode Innovation Trust and a number of other prestigious grantmakers. In late 2020, the charity gained further recognition by winning the Sustainability prize at the Skift Innovation, Design and Experience Awards, which celebrate ‘the big ideas defining the future of travel.’

The organisation continues to grow, developing a purpose-built technology platform and forging relationships with numerous private and public sector partners to drive forward a radical solution to systemic challenges within the UK’s social care sector.
