About the role

Campaign Bootcamp is a charity dedicated to ensuring that people most impacted by injustice are leading campaigns that affect their lives. Our programmes are designed to be accessible to anyone who wants to make change happen. We do this because we want to empower people impacted by injustice to have the tools and skills they need to end it. Our work sees us support individuals develop the skills they need to address some of the biggest issues and challenges in society from housing to fairer treatment of migrants and LGBTQ+ rights.

We have a long standing and developed residential training offer, and are currently growing our programmes which help support grassroots campaigners. We’ve grown significantly in the last six months and are planning further growth.

For us to be able to support and empower people to change the world, we need a Head of Operations who can design, develop and deliver the internal systems, structures, processes and policies to enable our teams to thrive. As a growing organisation with a UK wide workforce, we are constantly trying to develop and implement new and better ways of working.

This is an exciting and challenging role, working closely with the Board, CEO and Leadership Team to deliver on our ambitions with scope to bring your own innovative thinking.

Who we're looking for

This role leads our operational functions and is a mixture of project management, HR, legal, governance and IT. We don’t expect that anyone will be an expert in all of those areas. However, we will expect that you are a generalist with a strategic outlook and have the ability to help us scale and grow.

In order to thrive with us, you’ll need to be comfortable in situations where complex injustices are being discussed and be excited about being part of an organisation trying to empower those facing injustice. As we’re growing, we’ll also need you to need to be excited about leading and implementing change.

We’re a flexible employer and open to you working up to two days from home. However, we’ll need you to be in our London office regularly and be willing to travel to our other offices in the UK (Birmingham, Coventry, Bradford and Sheffield).

We’re particularly interested to hear from candidates who have faced a form of injustice or discrimination.

Campaign Bootcamp is all about supporting people in marginalised communities to challenge the powerful. It’s really exciting to be able to tell you a bit about it.

We do this work because we know that we know that people impacted by an injustice should be in leadership of efforts to end it. All of our training is designed with that in mind. We aim to always leave people with the skills, confidence and community they need to run powerful campaigns which bring about lasting change.

As we plan our work we are guided by our vision – a world in which people impacted by injustice have the tools and skills they need to end it and our mission – to support people to run effective campaigns that challenge injustice.

Our new Head of Operations will be a key part of achieving our mission and vision. You’ll work with the whole team to ensure they have everything they need to focus on delivering awesome, powerful training. That, of course, includes the sort of thing you’d expect to see in a role like HR, legal, governance and IT but is doesn’t stop there.

You’ll also need to focus on helping us build an organisation which truly lives by its values. That means thinking about how oppression works and helping us build an organisation where everyone can thrive.

We’re very conscious that we exist in a complex ecosystem so a big part of your work will be working with our allies and partners to share best practice, get new ideas and support each other.

You’ll be seen by the whole organisation as a leader, so we expect you to set a great example in prioritising your work, communicating clearly, supporting each other and living by our values.

We do this work because we’ve found that today it’s far too hard for ordinary people, especially those in marginalised communities, to challenge those in power. Our three programmes are carefully designed to help people build the skills, confidence and community needed to bring about powerful change. Our programmes are:

  • Everyday Activism supports local people to get involved in civic life in ways which improve the places and spaces that matter most to their community. We’ve piloted it in Yorkshire for the last 18 months and it will shortly launch in new locations.
  • Campaign Bootcamp Residential is for people who want to run bigger and more effective campaigns. The year-long programme helps them take things to the next level by teaching them the key skills needed to bring about social change – including strategy, tactics, fundraising, working the press, social media, coding and managing your mental health while campaigning.
  • Train the Trainer programme launched in 2016 is designed for people who want to learn how to deliver effective training to marginalised communities who are pushing for change. It’s been hugely successful and popular, with five applicants for every available space.

How we work:

We have a team of almost 20 people, our staff are based across the UK, and we aim to work as flexibly and digitally as we can. All of our IT, CRM and computing systems are cloud based. We believe in offering staff a high degree of flexibility and autonomy. Given the nature of our work and our UK wide workforce regular travel will be required in this role.
