The Board of Governors is the governing body of Greater Brighton Metropolitan College (GB MET). It is responsible for setting the College’s mission and strategy and ensuring that its resources are used efficiently and effectively.
The Governors uphold the highest standards of conduct, in accordance with the Nolan Principles of Public Life. The Board is committed to openness and accountability and the minutes of the Board and committee meetings are available on the College website.
The Board has a maximum of 10 governors with seven external governors, a staff governor, a student governor and the CEO. External Governors bring a range of experience and knowledge from the business, public and voluntary sectors as well as local schools and community groups. The full Board meets every month (apart from August).
There are two committees; the Audit Committee meets termly and is made up of five members – with three governors and two co-opted members. The Remuneration Committee has three members. Special committees are established as required.
The term of office is three years (subject to annual review) with the potential to serve up to three terms.
The time commitment is based around monthly board meetings (except August) which start at 16:30, two strategic away days in Autumn and Spring and an annual strategic review day in June each year. In addition, the Chair and Governors will be expected to get involved with the College; to be visible and engage with staff and students and attend events both internally and externally to represent the College.
It is estimated that the Chair will be required to commit to two-three days per month and the Governors one day per month.
As several Board Members are approaching the end of their terms of office, GB MET now needs a new Chair and three External Governors to join the board in March 2020.
They need a Board that is fully engaged and committed and will provide the necessary support and advice to the Executive Team to enable the College to develop and grow. They also need people who share their values, who care about the region and be passionate about the socio-economic impact the College creates in the community.
For the Chair, they need an experienced strategic leader with strong chairing experience who will be deeply committed to improving opportunities for students through education and training.
They require three outstanding Governors who bring strategic and commercial experience in the areas of finance, accountancy, business development or commercial partnerships. One of these Governors will need to be a qualified strategic finance professional to Chair the Audit Committee.

GB MET was created from the merger of City College Brighton and Northbrook College Sussex in April 2017. It is the college for the city and region drawing on 150 years of heritage, history and experience.
With a turnover c.£40m and over 1,200 expert staff, we support around 13,000 students each year to achieve their aspirations – whether they are starting out in their career, re-training or learning for pleasure – across full and part-time courses, apprenticeships, professional qualifications and university degrees.
Operating across five campuses in Brighton, Shoreham and Worthing, we offer a wide variety of courses providing practical skills and experience which are industry-led, with an emphasis on employability, enterprise and entrepreneurship. Courses include live projects and work placements and many have the endorsement of professional bodies. Our teaching team are industry experts and this year we were very proud to have been awarded a silver under the government’s Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF).
We are seeking our next Chair and several new External Governors to join the Board in March 2020. For the Chair, we need someone with strong chairing skills, a strategic and forward-looking approach and a commitment to good governance. You will have a collegiate and inclusive approach, able to bring the best out of the Board, the senior staff team and the organisation as a whole.
For Governors, we seek people with board level experience, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, as well as energy, enthusiasm and commitment. We wish to attract highly commercial people who bring experience of finance, accountancy, business development or commercial partnerships and, in particular, we need a qualified strategic business finance professional to Chair our Audit Committee.

Chief Executive Officer
Greater Brighton Metropolitan College (GB MET) was created from the merger of City College Brighton and Northbrook College Sussex. It is the college for the city and region and draws on 150 years of heritage, history and experience.
They offer a comprehensive range of qualifications for 16-19 year olds, university degrees, full and part-time courses for adults, apprenticeships and professional qualifications. GB MET operates across five campuses in Brighton, Shoreham and Worthing and they teach around 3,500 16-18 year olds, 1,000 undergraduates, 7,500 adult learners and 800 apprentices.
More than 1,200 expert staff work with their students to equip them with the knowledge and skills they need to prepare them for the world of work – to encourage support and inspire them. GB MET helps to build the self-belief, confidence and bravery their students to unlock their potential, transform lives, exceed aspirations and celebrate ambition.
This is a challenging but exciting time for GB MET. Over the last four years they have been engaged in a major transformation and cultural change programme which has involved stabilising finances, raising standards, developing partnerships, redevelopment of the estate and raising the reputation and profile of the College in the FE sector and region.
Following the merger in 2017, GB MET created a new Estates Strategy and has since benefited from their sites in Worthing and East Brighton; with longer term investment to improve and upgrade facilities.
A new £9m Construction and Trades Centre was completed and fitted out during the 2017/18 academic year and, in 2018, the College was awarded a £5m LEP grant. This grant, matched by a significant College investment generated from the disposal of land, has created a £16m fund to redevelop the city-centre campus into a new Centre for Creative and Digital Industries to create cutting-edge teaching facilities and to train the next generation of creative and digital workers. Formal planning was issued in March 2019 and work is underway with the design and construction phase.
Although a recent Ofsted inspection (under the new framework) assessed the College as ‘requires improvement’, it was acknowledged that progress had been made across a number of areas and their teaching staff were recognised as using their industry expertise to reinforce high professional standards to the benefit of students.
During the year, the quality of their teaching was recognised by the government’s Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) and proudly received a Silver Award. This UK-based award recognises that the College delivers high-quality teaching, learning and outcomes for their Higher Education students.
Despite these challenges, which are typical across the further education sector, GB MET is on a positive path to become a quality college in the region. In order for them to realise their vision: to be recognised by students, staff, employers and their communities as an exceptional provider of technical, vocational and professional education, they need a highly effective and committed Board to provide support and challenge to help them reach their objectives as efficiently and effectively as possible.
