We're interested in qualified people with substantial leadership experience in education (teaching/learning/assessment/research), estates and capital development and/or finance and audit.
South Staffordshire College is one of the largest colleges in the West Midlands, and with five campuses, 10,000 students and 450 dedicated employees the College is vital to the local communities it serves.
The College is dedicated to delivering the highest quality learning and development environment which enables all students to achieve their best. The College is focused on developing partnerships with employers, of all types and sizes, to ensure that students are equipped with the skills and capabilities to meet their needs for now, and for the future. It is key for the College to ensure their focus is developing essential skills and employment opportunities for students.
With a ‘requires improvement’ Ofsted rating at present, there is a clear focus for improvement as this is not where the College wants to be. There needs to be meaningful curriculum development and sustainable finances which the Board recognises as an urgent priority – a key focus for the recently appointed CEO & Principal and Chair of Governors.
To support South Staffordshire College’s ambition, they are looking to appoint several new Board Members (Governors) to the Corporation Board – the College’s governing body. They are specifically looking for talented people who can add value to the discussions which take place at the Board and its committees through providing support and challenge to the leadership team through the appraisal of reports, plans and strategies. South Staffordshire College welcomes interest from qualified people with substantial leadership experience from the following sectors:
Whilst having non-executive/board-level experience is desirable, what’s more important is your ability to work as part of our Board and provide the scrutiny required in an organisation of this size from a place of experience. As a Member of our Corporation Board, you will become an integral part of the governance and oversight at the College.
You should ideally live or work locally to South Staffordshire as your attendance will be required at the meetings of the Corporation Board, which meets ten times per year. All Members are expected to join a committee of the Board and we can discuss this with you on appointment.
Firstly, may I thank you for your interest in joining the Board of Governors of South Staffordshire College.
South Staffordshire College is the largest college in the region with the responsibility to deliver a diverse range of further education and higher education courses, training and apprenticeship programmes across Staffordshire and its surrounding areas. Our campuses are based in Penkridge (Rodbaston), Cannock, Lichfield and on two sites in Tamworth.
Our College is dedicated to delivering the highest quality learning and development environment that enables all our leaners to achieve their best. We are focused on serving the communities in which we are located and developing partnerships with employers, of all types and sizes, to ensure they have people with the skills and capabilities to meet their needs for now, and for the future.
South Staffordshire College has a strong reputation that is built on great staff and a significant asset base. The College is now embarking on a strategy to ensure that its offerings are even better aligned to changing demands of employers in the area. In this context, we are seeking new Governors to join the Board who can bring the experience and skills relevant to developing and delivering this strategy and supporting the Executive team to drive the College forward.
We are looking for Governors who have a passion for the positive and essential role that FE colleges play in society. In terms of specifics, it is not essential that you live in Staffordshire although it would be helpful to have an understanding of the challenges facing the area, as would a network of local contacts.
Our Board currently consists of ten independent governors, two students, two staff governors and the Principal/CEO. We currently have the opportunity to recruit 3 new governors. The Board meets approximately seven times each year, including strategy days, and each external governor will be asked to join at least one committee, and possibly short term task groups. Our committees usually meet three or four times a year.
The opportunities for the College are many and varied so being a Governor at this time is both exciting and rewarding, so if you would like to be part of this new chapter in the College’s life and join our motivated team, please do get in touch.
We look forward to hearing from you.
Chair of the Board of Governors
