Assistant Director of Supporter Engagement | NHS Charities Together

Are you a skilled supporter engagement fundraiser with experience in individual giving, in memory and legacy support and DIY fundraising? NHS Charities Together are recruiting an Assistant Director of Supporter Engagement to work across the fundraising team, creating an implementing their supporter experience strategy.

  • Location: Home based with one day a week on average in Warwick office (Subject to Covid guidance)
  • Salary: £65,000 - £70,000 plus 10% pension contributions, 28 days annual leave

NHS Charities Together represents, champions and supports the work of 241 member charities. Following the high-profile success of the Covid-19 Urgent Appeal, raising over £150m and supporting 1.5m NHS staff since March 2020, we are now recruiting a new Assistant Director of Supporter Engagement to inspire and motivate more people to connect and contribute to the long-term work of NHS Charities Together.

Working closely with the Fundraising Director and forming part of the senior Fundraising Leadership Team, you will play an essential role in our plans to grow the charity by developing and delivering a supporter engagement strategy. You will be accountable for increasing the amount of fundraised income that is generated annually, specifically individual fundraising that encompasses areas of individual giving, in memory and legacy support and DIY fundraising, in addition to leading marketing and communications to all supporters. The emphasis of this role is to both recruit and retain the support of our donors and fundraisers.


You will have a track record of leading a similar function within a not-for-profit organisation, and of raising significant levels of fundraised income from a diverse range of income streams. You will have strong analytical and strategic planning skills, be a confident communicator, and have an in-depth knowledge of the fundraising market and regulation. You will be comfortable leading change, developing a new team and encouraging new ways of working.

You will also be an innovative thinker with the ability to review our existing supporter base, analyse the market environment and identify opportunities for supporter acquisition, engagement and retention.

Key Responsibilities

Management and Leadership

  • Work closely with key colleagues, stakeholders and members to execute the Fundraising strategy for the organisation.
  • Together with the Fundraising Senior Leadership Team, build and oversee the Fundraising department, ensuring effective working within the team and compliance with key processes.
  • Together with the Fundraising Director, lead, motivate and be responsible for the wellbeing of the team, in line with NHSCT’s values and behaviours.
  • Line manage a small but vital team of Managers, Executives and Officers, taking full responsibility for their inductions, development and performance management.
  • Effectively lead and manage project meetings with internal and external stakeholders, coordinating the delivery of events and campaigns to achieve their objectives.

Strategy Development & Implementation

  • Lead on the development and implementation of the Supporter Engagement Strategy, embedding new engagement opportunities and delivering an integrated supporter acquisition programme across multiple channels.
  • Work with the Marketing and Communications team to support the development of the NHSCT brand and increase awareness of the charity.

Supporter Stewardship

  • Develop and deliver an effective programme to engage individuals to support NHSCT in a range of ways including donations, individual fundraising, regular giving and legacy pledges which increases the size of our active supporter base.
  • Develop a stewardship programme for our existing supporters based on good practice and insights to ensure appropriate, relevant and engaging communications.
  • Work closely with our Donor Systems Manager to maximise the benefits of our database (Raiser’s Edge) to personalise communications for maximum effect.
  • Create a programme that enables continued understanding of our supporters’ preferences, behaviour and motivations through testing.
  • Working with the Donor Systems Manager review and implement processes that ensures we offer the best possible supporter experience and effectiveness.

Performance Management

  • To drive a high-performance culture that embraces insight, testing, evaluating and improvement.
  • To be accountable for developing and delivering against cross-departmental KPIs and budgets relating to income, expenditure, ROI and recruitment; monitoring performance across the department and providing effective support and management where required.
  • To support and collaborate with colleagues across the Fundraising Leadership Team to maximise opportunities and performance.
  • To maintain an excellent understanding of the external Fundraising environment. Horizon scanning and exploring new marketing opportunities whilst conscious of the charity landscape, trends and up and coming techniques/technologies.
