Trustee | Alpha Academies Trust

With an ambitious strategy to continue its growth and consolidate standards across its network of primary and secondary Academies in Stoke-on-Trent, the Alpha Academies Trust is seeking an established senior executive from a significant local or regional employer to join their Board as a Trustee to support the creation of aspirational curriculums and pathways for their children and students.

  • Location: Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire
  • Salary: Unremunerated with reasonable expenses paid

About the role

The Alpha Academies Trust is a partnership of five Academies, which positively influences the education system across Stoke-on-Trent. With oversubscribed primary and secondary schools, and all but one graded good, the Trust has invested heavily in expanding school buildings to grow its student capacity and is working hard to consolidate its standards across all Academies.

The Trust is a charitable company, with the Board of Trustees accountable as the company directors. Trustees play an essential role as they are responsible for setting strategic direction, holding the CEO and Executive Team to account, and ensuring the financial probity of the Trust; safeguarding it for the future.

The Board of Trustees is appointed by the Members, who also provide oversight of the Board. The Board is supported by two sub-committees: Audit, Finance and Risk Committee and the Standards Committee, and each of the five Academies has a Local Governing Body and a Challenge & Improvement Committee who manage the Academy and report into the Board on policy, risk and practice.

There are currently eight members on the Board of Trustees and this appointment will bring the total to nine. The Board requires a breadth and depth of different sector expertise and knowledge to effectively support the primary functions of the Board. The Trustee Board currently benefits from a broad range of strategic experience in strategic delivery, education and safeguarding, finance, marketing, HR and organisational development and governance. For this appointment, the Board are seeking a Trustee with current experience of working at a senior strategic level in a significant local or regional employer, bringing with them a wealth of knowledge on regional skills needs and economic growth, as well as links to local business communities.

Each Trustee is linked with an Academy and receives a thorough induction, including an introduction to the Trust, its finances, operations, HR, and governance, as well as safeguarding training, and with opportunities for further development throughout their term of office.

The term of office is four years and Trustees can serve a maximum of two terms with Board approval. The Board meets six times per year and each sub-committee meets four times a year. The time commitment will be about one day a month, depending on the time of year and must include time for reading Board and Committee reports.

Who we're looking for

The Alpha Academies Trust are seeking to appoint a Trustee with current experience working at a senior strategic level in a significant employer in either Stoke-on-Trent or in Staffordshire. You will have relevant knowledge of employment skills and training needs, and insight into the future economic growth of the region. With your expertise and knowledge, you will support the Board and Executive Team to develop aspirational strategies around curriculum development and pathways for children and students that reflect and respond to regional employment and training needs. You will also provide that essential link to local and regional businesses and be a positive influence on developing the Trust’s strategy around employability and work-readiness.

Using your skillset to support and develop the Trust’s strategy, you will work in the best interests of the Trust, its Academies, and the children and students they support and educate. You will provide the right level of support and challenge, acting with integrity and honesty at all times.

This is a fantastic opportunity to join a dynamic Board of Trustees and make a significant contribution to the strategic direction and development of a Trust whose focus is to develop their capacity and have a greater influence over the future life chances of 5,000 children and students across Stoke-on-Trent.

Welcome from the Chair and Principal/CEO

Dear Candidate,

Founded in 2011, as the College Academies Trust, the Alpha Academies Trust was initially sponsored by Stoke-on-Trent College to sponsor the Discovery Academy, a newly created Academy through the merger of two secondary schools in Stoke-on-Trent.

Today, the Trust comprises three primary (one federated) and three secondary academies (one providing Alternative Provision). All schools are based in Stoke-on-Trent.

To support this growth and development in 2017, the Trust changed its named to the Alpha Academies Trust at the same time as achieving independent status as a sponsor trust in its own right.

The Trust’s vision is to lead a high performing multi-academy trust of great schools, clustered in local communities serving Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire and Cheshire, putting students first and attaining the highest standards. The Trust refreshed its Mission and Aims this academic year and its single mission is to put Students/Children first. A copy of this updated document is available on the microsite.

The foundation of the Alpha Academies Trust is therefore grounded in our strong engagement in local communities located in some of the most deprived areas of the country. The Trust is developing a cluster-based model of partner primary and secondary schools working in geographical hubs to support transition from early years to secondary phases of education.

Academies and schools in our Trust are improving and making strong progress to becoming excellent schools in their local communities. The majority are now the first-choice school in their area and experiencing exceptional growth in student numbers.

As we continue to grow, change and develop as a Trust, we now seek an additional Trustee to join our board and support the development of our strategy and oversight.

Please continue to read the information contained on this website which provides insight into our organisation.

If you feel you have the skills and experience we are looking for, then we look forward to hearing from you and we would welcome applicants from diverse backgrounds.

The Members, who are the appointing body for Trustees, look forward to meeting you.

Kate Townshend
Chair of the Alpha Academies Trust Board

Simon French
Executive Principal/CEO of the Alpha Academies Trust

About Alpha Academies Trust

The Alpha Academies Trust was established to create a network of schools in North Staffordshire that raises the aspirations of their children and students and the wider communities they work within. Their aim is to build pathways for children from primary age through to post-16 and beyond to higher education, apprenticeships, employment and adulthood.

The Alpha Academies Trust works in partnership with two secondary schools (The Discovery Academy and Excel Academy), two primary schools (Sneyd Academy and Maple Court Academy), and Reach Academy, a specialist education school, with capacity for 3,500 children and students. Eaton Park Academy, a successful primary school with 500 children, will also be joining the Trust this September.

Simon French was appointed CEO & Executive Principal last September following his successful period as Principal at The Discovery Academy. Both Simon and the Board have been ambitious to drive the internal growth of the Academies and the Trust has focused on ambitious £3m capital projects to develop the schools, which has also created significant investment in the local areas.

The Trust wants to provide a comprehensive and high-quality curriculum across all the Academies, with its mission for at least two of the Academies to be judged as outstanding by 2022. They champion a collaborative approach to teaching and innovation, with research at the core of curriculum and teaching developments, with a focus on inclusion and improving progression routes for students. The Trust is committed to improving and maintaining educational standards across their Academies, supported by strong leadership and governance, and financial security.
