Japan House London (JHL) serves as the premier cultural home of Japan in the United Kingdom, offering an authentic encounter with Japanese art, design, gastronomy, and technology. As a vital forum for creative and intellectual exchange, JHL required the next generation of Non-Executive Directors (NEDs) to join its Board. The recruitment campaign sought visionary leaders who could deepen appreciation of Japanese culture while ensuring the institution’s long-term sustainability and strategic growth.

The Context

The search began at a pivotal moment, as JHL prepared for a staggered leadership transition starting in January 2027. The organisation faced a shifting “post-digital” landscape, requiring new expertise in digital innovation, AI, and cybersecurity to reach broader, more diverse audiences. Additionally, the organisation needed to strengthen financial resilience by diversifying income streams and expanding corporate sponsorships and commercial revenue to complement government funding.

The Brief

The client sought two specific committee chairs: one for the Audit & Risk Committee (ARC) and another for the Remuneration and Nominations Committee (RNC). Success meant finding candidates with not only strong financial literacy and governance expertise but also “cultural fluency”—a deep passion for Japanese culture and an understanding of the diplomatic sensitivities involved in navigating relationships with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Tokyo and the Embassy of Japan in London. Peridot Partners implemented a robust search strategy that attracted 97 applications, focusing on inclusivity and values-led leadership, specifically the Japanese concept of Omotenashi (anticipating needs with care and warmth).

The Outcome

From a highly competitive field, six candidates were shortlisted for interview, representing a diverse range of skills and backgrounds, resulting in two exceptional appointments. These appointments have strengthened the Board’s ability to provide constructive challenge while maintaining alignment with JHL’s cultural mission. The new directors bring a blend of global leadership advisory, financial compliance and legal expertise, alongside significant experience of the UK-Japan business corridor. Together, they provide the Board with enhanced capability to support effective governance, organisational resilience and long-term strategic planning. Over the next 12-24 months, the new NEDs will be well positioned to support the development of new commercial partnerships and guide JHL through complex digital transformation initiatives, helping to ensure the institution remains a resilient bridge between the UK and Japan.
