Trustee interview preparation guide for awarding organisations
What to expect in a trustee interview
Interviewing for a trustee or non-executive director role slightly differs from what you may have experienced when applying for your “day job”. Increasingly, organisations are running trustee recruitment processes similarly to senior-level recruitment to ensure the right strategic leaders are appointed who bring diversity, competitive insight and a successful track record of growth and development.
Firstly, trustee interviews tend to be shorter and follow a one-stage process. You need to succinctly convey who you are, why you want to be involved with the organisation, what you can bring to the board and your understanding of what a trustee role involves.
Secondly, focus your answers more on your motivations and strategic contributions rather than your operational successes. They will want to know how your knowledge, skills, and experience can benefit the board, the organisation, and its users. You will also need to demonstrate how you work with others at a strategic level and why you feel aligned with this particular organisation’s values and mission.
How to prepare for a trustee interview
To prepare for a trustee interview, research the organisation’s mission, understand board responsibilities and good governance and reflect on strategic contributions from your career. Prepare clear, concise responses using the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to demonstrate how your experience aligns with the board’s needs and expectations.
Board interview questions tend to cover:
- Your understanding of the organisation
- Your passion and alignment with their values
- How your skills and experiences will benefit the board, organisation and end users.
- Your communication and teamwork skills
- Your understanding of the responsibilities of being a board member
- Any key factors that may affect the organisation, such as external policy updates, EDI focuses, regulatory updates, etc
- Personal implications which may have an impact on your ability to take up a board position, such as time commitment or conflicts of interest
To help you prepare and practice structuring your answers clearly and concisely to make the most of the limited time you may have in your Trustee interview; we have put together this cheat sheet with some example questions that follow these themes so you can start planning how best to convey to the panel why you are the right fit for their board.
Mistakes to avoid in trustee interviews
Many candidates fall short by focusing on the wrong things or not preparing for the strategic nature of a trustee role. Avoid these common pitfalls:
- Over-emphasising operational achievements instead of strategic insight
- Lacking an understanding of the organisation’s mission, structure, or challenges
- Giving unclear answers about your availability or potential conflicts of interest
Keep your answers focused, informed, and relevant to the board’s needs. You’re being assessed for how you think, not just what you’ve done.
