Organisation: Electrical Safety First
Role: Trustees (HR / Governance)
Location: London SE1
Electrical Safety First (ESF) is the UK charity dedicated to reducing deaths and injuries caused by electrical accidents.
We campaign on behalf of consumers and electrical trade professionals to improve safety regulation and ensure safety messages are appropriate, up to date and well communicated. We also provide expert information and advice to help people protect themselves from faulty, damaged, sub-standard, and poorly maintained electrical installations and electrical appliances.
Our origins date back to 1956 but more recently we’ve focused on having a stronger consumer focus, particularly with regard to product safety. We work with government, manufacturers, contractors, consumers, a range of partners and well known retail brands providing advice and support on the safety of electrical products.
Our challenges are increasingly complex. For example, we take a leading role to ensure that consumers can be assured of the safety of products that they buy from online markets and have to get to grips with the dangers of sub-standard products emerging from countries with poorer safety standards than our own. How are we going to manage this when Brexit happens and trade agreements change?
Our work is fascinating, yet we also know that to be most effective, great governance is at the heart of a successful and sustainable organisation. Investing in new Trustees, with a wider range of skills and experience, is a key part of ensuring a safer future for all consumers of electrical products.
We have a positive impact on every person in the UK and our cutting edge research on electrical safety in the private rented sector, with the elderly and in collaboration with organisations like Shelter and Crisis also offers exposure to the wider charity sector, so you can enjoy the best of both the charity sector and commercial business in this role.
Currently, we have openings for two people with either senior level human resources, finance, governance and / or compliance experience. We have very capable executives, and the board will benefit from the additional assurance and oversight to be able to challenge and support these areas effectively.
We are keen for new Trustees to bring more diversity to our board and therefore strongly encourage people from different socio-economic and cultural backgrounds, genders and ethnic groups to come forward. Experience of, or an interest in, consumer rights is also desirable, as is previous charity experience.
We are also interested in people who may consider taking on a Chair role in the future, and also those who may be interested in joining the Certsure Board.
Certsure is a partnership between Electrical Safety First and the Electrical Contractors’ Association providing professional services and certification to customers across the electrical and gas services sector. As an important source of income for the charity your oversight and assurance to ESF that Certsure is delivering to the charity’s expectations and aspirations is an important element of the Trustee role.
Attendance at four board meetings per year, and another four committee meetings, is critical. You must be prepared to give on average one day per month to this role.
In return for your time and energy we will commit to ensuring that you are trained in charity governance and what it is to be a good board member. There will also be opportunities to network with other charity Trustees at conferences and other relevant events.
