Role: Chair of the Corporation Board
Remuneration: Unpaid and voluntary with reasonable expenses paid
Time commitment: Approximately 2 days per month / 0.5 days per week

The Chair of South Essex College will lead an ambitious board of governors, supported by a dedicated team of specialist senior leaders led by a highly experienced Principal & Chief Executive.

South Essex is a vibrant, exciting, ambitious region which embraces change and has the ability to attract new industry and investment. Its main aspirations are to tackle worklessness, create new jobs, create new business and provide a highly skilled workforce in order to attract new business for the area. There has never been a greater need for skilled professionals in our region and South Essex College plans to be a key provider of skills development across the South East Region at all levels.

Our College is considered, by Ofsted, to providing a ‘Good’ standard of education for the c12,000 students who us as their preferred provider. We are financially robust with a turnover of c£44m though recognise the financial pressures and challenges experienced by the entire further education sector. Our plans are bold and ambitious and having worked to develop new campuses and state-of-the-art learning environments for our students we continue to grow and develop.  We expect to lead the merger with PROCAT in February 2019 and are developing a new campus in Basildon.

Our next Chair will join us at a very exciting time for the College and will expected to quickly grasp the developments we have made and the work yet to come. With the support of the Clerk to the Corporation, the Chair will ensure the Corporation fulfils its statutory responsibilities in provide support and challenge to our senior leadership team whilst also identifying new ways for the Board to be assured of the work happening in the organisation.

You will have substantial leadership experience in a complex business environment. Adept at financial and business planning, with knowledge of change management and corporate governance, you will understand how a non-executive board operates either through direct experience of being a NED or through reporting to a board at a senior executive level. Your knowledge will ensure we operate best practice models of governance and your network may open doors to future partnership opportunities for the College.
