Imperial College London is one of the world’s leading universities, with recognised excellence in education and research in science, engineering, medicine and business.  To maintain its position as an international leader, Imperial has in the last two years committed to a long-term and large scale investment in its development activities, in order to grow philanthropic support to the College.

The College knew in order to achieve this they need to partner with a leading search firm that had a track record of achievement in Senior Higher Education Development and Alumni recruitment. After a robust market analysis of the leading firms and aligning their values and principles with their needs, Peridot Partners and Imperial College London created a partnership to source their key new major gifts and development team.  The overall campaign included the recruitment of the Deputy Director of Development, Director of Principal Gifts, Head of Major Gifts and 4x Head of Development positions for their various faculties.

Although Imperial College’s academic reputation is very strong, their development programme had inconsistencies over recent years due to change in leadership and thus they have had a very challenging reputation in the fundraising community to overcome.

With reputation management being key, in order to attract the right calibre of individual, we took a far more vigorous approach in educating the market and candidate briefings, ultimately in order to get beyond the immediate negative responses that came our way through many candidates.  The smaller pool of very high calibre senior development professionals in the UK higher education field also provided a challenge and thus we broaden our search internationally, targeting the best universities and colleges as well as more generalist non-profit organisations, coupled with the highest performing professionals in our network; both for direct approaches as well as for networking purposes.

We successfully appointments to all roles, with the key appointments coming from organisations such as: University of California, Colorado State University, City University London, Cass Business School, The British Museum and Imperial War Museum, to name a few.
