Richmond upon Thames College – Head of Governance

Richmond upon Thames College – Head of Governance

Richmond upon Thames College
Role: Head of Governance
Responsible to: The Corporation Board through the Chair
Salary: Competitive
Contract: Permanent and part-time (4 days per week)

Richmond upon Thames College has been on a transformational journey these past few years. Going from Ofsted “Requires Improvement” and financially inadequate to “Good” and financially stable. The College has a refreshed Board made up of professional and exceptionally experienced people and led by a skilled Chair. At a pivotal time for the College, with an £80m capital development programme taking place and ambitious plans for our curriculum delivery, we require a governance professional to support our Board. The College offers a breadth of academic, professional and technical programmes from entry level to level 5, across all age groups. Increasingly our emphasis is shifting towards career pathways, immersive use of technology and curriculum co-creation and design with employers.

The Corporation Board and College Leadership Team assiduously focus on the continual improvements across all College key performance indicators. At a strategic level, our improvements have been addressed by refreshing the Board’s own membership with increased business and financial acumen; and, secondly, over the past two years, further rejuvenation of the Leadership and College Management Teams providing a dynamic, capable, responsive and forward-looking team.

As Head of Governance you will be secretary to our Board and its Committees, providing full and comprehensive secretariat support. You will be responsible for advising the Board on constitutional matters, duties and powers within the current legislative framework, whilst ensuring the effective operation within the College. The Head of Governance is accountable to the Board through the Chair and will work closely with the Chair, Board Members, the Chief Executive & Principal and other members of the College Leadership Team.

Whilst working closely with the College Leadership Team, the Head of Governance is independent of that team and provides impartial advice and guidance to the Board and the Chair.

As Head of Governance you will also:

  • be responsible for acting as curator for all the policies throughout the College; producing statutory, governance and Board related policies
  • work closely with all relevant managers to compile and manage a library of policies for the College
  • be appointed as the College’s Data Protection Officer supporting organisational compliance with data protection, freedom of information and other related legislation
  • be a key contact for external regulators

We are looking for a governance expert with substantial previous experience as clerk and/or company secretary to a dynamic board. In line with our commercial astuteness as a College, you will also need to have commercial awareness and the ability to support developments in our governance to support this. Whilst we would ideally like candidates to have experience of supporting a further education college board, what is important is a pragmatism and an ability to quickly grasp a change culture and a governing body that is leading with the College Leadership Team an education provider that’s a leader in the FE sector and which enhances the life chances of thousands of people each year.

If you have such experience and you would be interested in providing support and professional counsel to our Board, the College Leadership Team and the College as a whole and to be part of something that is going to be a very exciting and demanding journey, we would like to hear from you.
