Do you want to promote the advancement and development of all individuals with Special Educational Needs and create valuable outcomes for our members and society as a whole?

nasen (national association of special educational needs) is a national charity and membership body which supports those who work with children and young people with special educational needs and learning difficulties, through our membership, advice and our national professional development programmes.

As a champion, friend and protector of the SEND community, nasen support thousands of practitioners by providing relevant information, training and resources to enable staff to meet all pupils’ needs. Working with dedicated education professionals, nasen aims to ensure that practice for special and additional needs is both effective and current.

As we have begun our Strategy 2020, we look to strengthen our financial sustainability, diversify income streams and look to our future growth while continuing to place our members at the heart of all we do. Our core areas of focus are on growing the nasen membership, optimising our revenue streams and raising our profile. We have introduced a new successful tiered membership offer and are currently hosting the Whole School SEND consortium, which is delivering the government’s flagship SEND schools’ workforce contract, and we are keen to continue our direction of travel and gain more government contracts in the future.

With this strategy in mind, our new Chair will have a track record of leading an organisation through growth and change with previous experience at board level. We are looking for a Chair who is passionate about education and SEN in particular, who can be a critical friend to challenge and develop the thinking of the staff and board members, while acting with diplomacy and tact. This individual will have a collaborative and enabling leadership style, with the ability to optimise the performance of nasen, the board, and provide balanced measures of support, challenge and counsel to our Chief Executive.

Given our membership, we are an influential voice at national level on issues concerning SEN and we are regularly invited to meet with government agencies to offer advice and support at policy level. With this in mind, we are looking for a Chair who can act as an ambassador, represent us at events and in the media when appropriate.

We are also looking to appoint an additional Trustee with a strong track record in multi-channel strategic marketing and communications, which includes a high degree of digital fluency. You will also be able to demonstrate how you have used different digital techniques and technology to extend our reach and scope, drive engagement and deliver service improvements. This individual will have the ability to coach, challenge and mentor the Senior Management Team.

The time commitment for the Chair is estimated to be 2-4 days a month and the Trustee around 1 day a month on average.
