Trustees, Durham Students’ Union

Unremunerated (reasonable expenses will be reimbursed)  Durham Students’ Union is a student-led charity, supported by a professional management team, with £2million turnover and 30 staff, representing 17,000 students studying at Durham University. The University has two campuses – Durham city and Queen’s Campus (located in Stockton-on-Tees) – and is one of the top universities in the UK. It has a distinctive collegiate structure which includes 16 colleges.  The Union acts as a unified voice on campus and leads on issues such as academic representation and the provision of facilities, as well as running one of the most successful RAG operations (DUCK) in the country. The Union also has over 200 societies. We are nearing the completion of a three-year strategy which has taken us right back to our fundamental purpose: as a democratic organisation, we need to understand and then ensure that the needs of Durham students are met. We have refocused our attention away from large commercial operations to working with our members to support and develop them, while also providing a wide range of social activities and opportunities.  Our strategy has been supported by investment in new staff, improvements in our governance structure, and a renewed relationship with […]

Our membership is diverse with 43% mature students and 51% who do not leave home to attend university, which presents a big challenge for engagement and ensuring relevant service provision.  Our annual turnover of £1.4 million a large proportion of which is in the form of a block grant from the University.  We are a union with strong values and a clear strategic plan. Our people and culture are student-led, inspirational, welcoming, easy-to-use and challenging. Our future is about working to support and campaign with LJMU students so that they have the best success, prospects of employment and feel involved in Liverpool as a city. Over the past three years we have revolutionised how we do business with our members. In three years time we will move to a fantastic new site at Copperas Hill where LJMU are creating a […]
