Kent Union, External Trustees and Committee Members

Location: Canterbury Voluntary roles: Unremunerated  Kent Union is the representative body for students of the University of Kent and provides wide-ranging services for its members at campuses across Kent and on the Continent. We are a registered Charity, with annual revenues in excess of £11 million, 600 staff, 2,500 volunteers and services including a nightclub and a nursery, employment agency and retail outlets, a welfare advice centre, volunteering opportunities and a wide range of student activities. Included in the Sunday Times 100 Best Not-For-Profit Organisations to Work For on six occasions including in 2015, we believe we are one of the best students’ unions in the UK and one of the best UK charities to work for. We are often referred to as an example of good governance practice in the charity sector and continually seek improvements and efficiencies. Commercial Director, Early Intervention Foundation

Location: London Salary: £70-£80K The Early Intervention Foundation was established in 2013 to address the root causes of social problems for children and young people through intervening early. An an independent charity our vision is for every baby, child and young person to realise their potential and we have established ourselves as the ‘go-to’ organisation for evidence and advice on early intervention.  We have made significant progress in ensuring that this evidence is made more accessible and that the case is made to shift spend towards earlier intervention to improve outcomes for childrenand families.  We are one of the Government’s ‘What Works Centres’  using evidence to make better decisions at national and local levels and we receive funding from five different government departments,  as well as a range of donations from individuals, corporates and trusts and foundations. It is solely owned by the union and run as a social enterprise underpinned by strong values and a collaborative solution focused approach. With over 50% of all higher education students having access to information and services made available through the MSL system we are consolidating our market position and also exploring opportunities to grow and extend the reach of our solutions; this will include entry into a new international market. With a turnover of over £3m, it leads on a range of trading activity including a health and fitness centre, bars/restaurants, and cafes and shops, delivered across three vibrant and developing campuses. They are run for the benefit of the students at Queen Mary University of London and, through the provision of a range of services and spaces, help develop communities on campus, as well as opportunities for student engagement and employment. Any surpluses contribute to supporting the charitable aims and objectives of the Union, whose vision is for all students to feel part of a Queen Mary Community where they can develop, are supported and can make changes on issues that affect them. Salary circa £35,000 + Benefits University of York Students’ Union (YUSU) is run for, with, and by, the 17,500 students at the University of York. We’re a charity that helps students share ideas, create change, gain new skills and access help and support while at University.   We’re also a major success story having grown income from £800k to £5.5m over the last five years, increased participation and grown our profile on and off campus.  Our success mirrors that of York University, a Russell Group institution with ambitious plans and aspirations to grow the student population, particularly focusing on attracting new international and PhD students.   There are also major infrastructure developments that will continue to drive growth in both student numbers and student diversity. YUSU currently has approximately 50 career staff and up to 150 student staff at peak times of the year.  In order to deliver better services and support for students we have restructured the staff team and created a range of new senior management roles. Chief Executive, Prospect Housing

Salary £60k-£65k + benefits Based in Horley, near Gatwick Prospect Housing and Support Services (Prospect) supports vulnerable people with learning and physical disabilities and mental health problems to live more independently, realise their potential and to exercise choice and control over their lives.  Prospect achieves this through residential care homes, independent living flats, outreach services and projects primarily in East Surrey. Income is now around £9m, with around 90% of that currently received from local government.  There are  great opportunities to expand existing services into new geography as well as create new and modern services, particularly in the areas of transient services for young people, and supported, semi and independent living services.   Prospect has around  120 staff currently. Prospect’s recent challenges have been a real catalyst for change.
