Council Member – University of Bath

The University of Bath is a leading research-intensive institution with a strong international reputation.  Their achievements in research and teaching have established them at the forefront of UK universities together with being one of the highest rated Universities for student satisfaction and employability.  The Council of the University has the responsibility for planning future development and promoting the University’s interests in local, national and international markets and with their strategic aim to build a global reputation to match their UK position, they were keen to attract high calibre individuals who could bring more diversity to the Board, together with the appropriate professional skills and international experience in order to make a key and positive impact as a Council Board Member.

Having tried previously to recruit external trustees through their own networking and advertising, but had failed to find the right individuals, Peridot Partners was selected to lead a bespoke and targeted search campaign.  We were briefed by the Vice Chancellor to find candidates with requirements which included experience of international markets, existing board members with a public profile, ability to add significant ‘added value’ as well as being from a diversity group of either BME or women.

With a focus on organisations based in the region and those within a reasonable travelling distance from Bath, our research looked at the profiles of each Board and Council Member, Trustee and Executive Directors. We also reviewed high level individuals from further afield who had a connection to the area, such as family, previous work or educational links.  In addition, we covered a number of women’s networks which included The Times Power 100, Leading Ladies in the South West, 100 UK Leading Ladies, Debrett’s 500 2015 and BBC Radio 4 – The Woman’s Hour Power List 2014.

Sixteen profiles were presented for the long list review and from this field of candidates they had two appointed candidates, one being an international Finance Director with extensive international experience and the second being an Asian female Chief Executive.  In addition, two other female candidates were selected to maintain contact for future Board Member positions and two other individuals were chosen by the Vice Chancellor to explore working on other projects with the University.
