Anticipating the departure of the founding Chief Executive and at a point where they were looking to diversify and grow, Foundation appointed Peridot Partners to support the Chair and board of trustees recruit their next Chief Executive. They had already advertised themselves but failed to appoint.
Understanding that the organisation was feeling both anxious about the departure of their Founder, but also looking forward to the future, we spent considerable time at the beginning of the process gaining perspectives from a range of stakeholders from trustees, staff, partners and service users to understand the context, challenges ahead and priorities for the future. This helped to clarify and inform the job brief and the person specification (and encourage them to think beyond the ‘usual suspects’ to open and diversify the field), get the organisation focused on what they were looking for in their next Chief Executive and create a more compelling message to take to the market. We also worked with the recruitment panel to shape a selection process that included service user involvement and additional personality/psychometric assessment.
To find this person we undertook a targeted search approach complemented with an online advertising campaign. As the organisation was based in Leeds and operated across the north of England we concentrated our search, although not exclusively across the north of England region.
The short-listed included four search candidates who were: a Chief Executive of a leading national organisation supporting children and young people; an experienced NHS leader with recent experience within a high performing NHS Trust; the Chief Executive of a national organisation supporting socially excluded people; the Deputy Chief Executive of a large northern local authority. The appointed candidate was Maggie Jones, Chief Executive of Children England. Maggie brought over 25 years experience in the voluntary and community sectors across a range of areas including policy, research and service development and growth. She is making an exceptional contribution and the organisation continues to go from strength to strength.
